A decent day outing at Halu today. We were there in the morning till noon and then make a return trip again in the evening.

Common King Fisher, sighted while looking at a weaver's nets. A sign of hightening activities for the migratory season.

Little Grebe

This Oriental Magpie Robin keep flying back and even hopped around to within 2m of us while we are admiring the Little Grebes. Seem like he is guarding his territory.

The most notable catch of the day is a cooperative Large-Tailed Nighjar.

Interestingly we also spotted a male Common Flameback sunning itself with its wings spreadout.

Saw a few small groups of waders such as Whimbrels and Common Redshanks.

There is also a Milky Stork flying around:

Today we managed to caught a few birds with food in their beak.

First is a Common Iora whacking the worm very hard before swallowing it whole, at the reserve car park.

We then found a pair of Scarlet Backed Flowerpecker eating a berry of some kind. It does not swallow it. Instead it seems to be squeezing it for "juice". In the female photo you can see the berry in its deflated state.

On the way back at the main bridge there is this stray with a very interesting color scheme

Today I finally managed to find take a picture of a lesser coucal in the open. It seems to be eating a snail. It flew off with the snail in beak after it noticed me. The last few times the sighting was always to fleeting for a shot

It seems that the first migrants have started to arrived at SBWR....I spend some time there saw a few sand pipers and had good views of a scarlet-backed flowerpecker.

To while away a quiet Sunday afternoon, we decided to do a spot of late afternoon birding at Sungei Buloh. However, as we had only about 2hrs before closing time, we did not expect to have much of a catch. Boy! Were we wrong....

After strolling for about half an hour or so, we saw our first Copper-throated Sunbird!!! He was tweeting non-stop on a branch just above our heads, probably calling out to a female. The amazing thing was that despite his beautiful colors and loud calls, we did have problems spotting him initially. It was after a couple of minutes of neck-straining and eye-squinting that we finally found him.

Then we continued our stroll. Just as we were wondering out loud about how nice it would be if we could also spot a Crimson Sunbird....lo and behold! One flew and landed on a branch right before us!!! We were both dumbstruck! And awestruck as this gorgeous cutie looked even more brilliant in the flesh!

We then decided to call it a day and on our way back, we noticed fishes jumping in the waters at the main bridge. Suspecting that there might be otters lurking in the waters, we decided to wait by the main bridge. After a minute or so, we finally spotted the otters! There seemed to be a pack of at least 6 of them, similar to our first sighting of them a couple of weeks back. They were incredibly cute, one even swam up right to us to sneak a peek. Ueno Park, Tokyo, 17 May 2009

After Kasai Rinkai Koen we went to Ueno park hoping to spot more birds. Alas the time of year is not right and the pond is quite empty although we still manage to find a black crowned night heron, 1 grey heron, some spot billed ducks, 3 mullards, quite a few great cormorants and black tailed gulls (picture above). And of course the ever present jungle crows.

Visited this multi-use park near a large public aquarium. There are two islets, only one is accessible by a link bridge and you can find some gulls, great cormorants, sand pipers, diving ducks and a grey heron.

Probably mid-may is not the best season to visit.
